Real Madrid open talks with Enzo Fernández's camp

Chelsea and the Argentine have held no contract extension talks. Madrid are now in direct contact with his representatives. The Blues would be open to selling — but want to recoup more than the £107m paid in 2023.

EXCL: Real Madrid have started talks with Enzo Fernández's camp over a potential contract. No discussions have taken place between the 25-year-old and Chelsea over an extension. The Blues are open to selling — but will not accept a fee below what they paid. #CFC #RealMadrid @secretsourc

Real Madrid have opened dialogue with the representatives of Enzo Fernández as the Argentine's future at Chelsea enters serious doubt. Sources have told Secret Source that no contract extension talks have taken place between the midfielder and the club — and Madrid have now moved to fill that vacuum by initiating direct contact with his camp.

Fernández, 25, arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 in a deal that shattered the British transfer record at the time — a fee of £107 million paid to Benfica. He has since become one of the most important players in west London, but a breakdown in extension negotiations has placed that future in doubt heading into the summer.

The contract impasse

The core issue is wages. Fernández's camp are pushing for a significant pay rise that reflects his standing as one of the Premier League's top midfielders — a status his numbers this season back up unambiguously. The problem for Chelsea is structural: any uplift for the Argentine would trigger a chain reaction through a dressing room that includes two other high-earners in comparable positions.

Rewarding Fernández would require Chelsea to revisit the contracts of Moisés Caicedo and Cole Palmer — a cost the club are unwilling to absorb.

Raising Fernández's wages without offering comparable terms to Caicedo and Palmer would risk serious unrest. Chelsea's hierarchy are acutely aware of that dynamic and, rather than open that door, are prepared to consider selling — on their terms.

Chelsea's valuation

That last clause matters. Chelsea paid a record £107 million for Fernández. They are not prepared to sell for less. Any bid that fails to meet or exceed that figure will be rejected. Real Madrid, for their part, are testing the water through the player's camp before committing to a formal approach — a familiar opening move for a club of their resources.

Fernández's 2025/26 season

It would be difficult for Chelsea to argue the player hasn't earned his rise. Across all competitions this season, Fernández has been the club's most complete midfielder — contributing directly and creating constantly.

Since the start of last season, only Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah have recorded more combined goal contributions in all competitions than Fernández — who sits third in that league-wide ranking with 48 across the two campaigns. In the Premier League alone this term he has scored 10 goals, a figure that places him among the division's most productive midfielders. His average FotMob rating of 7.31 across the season reflects consistent rather than occasional influence.

In short: the player has the statistics to justify his wage demands. Chelsea's difficulty is that satisfying them creates a problem they cannot contain to one contract.

What happens next

Real Madrid's opening of talks with the player's representatives is the first concrete step. No fee has been discussed between clubs and no formal bid has been lodged. The next move belongs to Chelsea — whether to engage with Madrid directly, accelerate internal discussions, or hold firm and risk losing the player for nothing when his contract expires.

More to follow as the situation develops.
